The John Munroe Independent Hospital Group premium provider of individualized, high quality, forensic mental health services for adults and older people.

Operating in Staffordshire, we build upon over 22 years experience in older peoples mental health care provision.

We currently have two independent mental health hospitals which both specilise in older peoples mental health.

The John Munroe Hospital:  54 beds - 4 units.

Based in Rudyard, Staffordshire, John Munroe Hospital manages the care of patients with complex mental health problems aged 18 and above (up to 100) with organic (dementia) and functional (such as schizophrenia) illnesses.

The services of the hospital is detailed as follows:

Horton Ward - 18 years +

It is a fifteen bed locked/low secure unit for male and female patients who present with challenging behaviour and severe and enduring mental illness. The majority of patients are detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) on a Section 3 or a 37/41.

The unit offers a communal lounge/dining area, low stimulu area and a female only lounge. There are adequate toilets, bathrooms and shower facilities for the patient population, with all bedrooms offering ensuite facilities. The unit has an enclosed 'anti-climb' fenced-off garden area as well as a dedicated smoking area for patients. The nursing team includes two Registered Mental Nurses (RMN) and eight clinical support workers.

Coxon Ward - 18 Years +

It is a twenty eight (28) bed locked unit and provides rehabilitation for male and female patients. This unit is often a natural pathway from Horton Unit and accommodates individuals with severe and enduring mental illness, early onset dementia and challenging behaviour. This ward is divided into two separate sub units detailed as follows:

Rudyard:- Is for patients with organic illnesses who are very challenging and difficult to manage. They may be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) on a Section 3 or a 37/41 or they may be informal and therefore detained using the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

Kipling:- Is for patients with functional illnesses who are very challenging and difficult to manage. They may be detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) on a Section 3 or a 37/41 or they may be informal using the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

There are two communal lounge/dining area and ladies only lounge, a range of ensuite bedrooms, communal bathrooms and toilets, as well as access to extensive fenced-off garden areas. The nursing team includes three RMNs and eleven clinical support workers.

Plus we have two locked semi-independent living bungalows with secure fencing -

High Ash, Female only 5 beds and The Larches, Male only 6 beds.

The Edith Shaw Hospital is a private psychiatric hospital, based in Leek, Staffordshire with complex mental health problems aged 45 and above. They may be detained under the the Mental Health Act (1983) on a Sectin 3 or a 37/41 or they may be informal using the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

It is a 12 bedded, female only, locked - with secure fencing, independent hospital which aims to provide mental health rehabilitation in a secure, relaxed and homely environment in which quality care, well being, security and comfort are of prime importance.

There are two lounges, a garden area, communal toilets and bathrooms, with all patients' bedrooms having ensuite facilities. The hospital is located on the outskirts of the town of Leek and provides immediate access to town facilities for those patients who wish to access the community independently or with assistance.
