Edith Shaw - Female Only Hospital

Edith Shaw Hospital is a 12 bedded, female only, locked - with secure fencing, independent hospital which aims to provide mental health rehabilitation in a secure, relaxed and homely environment in which quality care, well being, security and comfort are of prime importance.

There are two lounges, a garden area, communal toilets and bathrooms, with all patients' bedrooms having en-suite facilities. The hospital is located on the outskirts of the town of Leek and provides immediate access to town facilities for those patients who wish to access the community independently or with assistance.

The hospital follows the relevant standards of the NSF for older people:
1) Rooting out age discrimination
2) Person-centred care
3) Mental health in older people
4) The promotion of health and active life in older age

Admission Criteria for The Edith Shaw Hospital - Female Unit

Our service user profile reflects the specialist input of our clinicians and includes:

• Adults and older people, aged 45+ with a severe and enduring mental illness, detained for treatment under the Mental Health Act (1983)
• Adults/Older people with organic brain damage either due to alcohol or other substance misuse or with early or late onset dementia.
• Informal service users with severe and enduring mental health problems (45+)
• Service users who primary diagnosis of mental illness (including personality disorders) and a secondary diagnosis of learning disability.
• Service users who have a mental illness and co morbidity physical condition such as diabetes or hypotension.
• Service users who have a mild to moderate learning disability and complex mental health/personality problems.

We do not admit:

• Adults (below the age of 44 years)
• Patients with Eating disorders as a primary diagnosis
• Patients with Moderate to Severe Learning disability as a primary diagnosis
• Patients with a primary diagnosis of paedophilia or sexual deviance
