It is a fifteen (15) bed locked/low secure unit for male and female patients who present with severe and enduring mental illness presenting with challenging behaviours who require intensive or slow stream rehabilitation.
The unit offers a very large communal lounge/dining area, low stimulus area and a female only lounge.
There are adequate toilets, bathrooms and shower facilities for the patient population, with all bedrooms offering ensuite facilities.
The unit has an enclosed 'anti-climb' fenced-off garden area as well as a dedicated smoking area for patients.
The nursing team includes 1 ward manager, two Registered Mental Nurses (RMN) and eight clinical support workers during a shift.
Admission Criteria: John Munroe Hospital offers treatment programmes for individuals with enduring mental health problems, for example:
• Adults and older people, aged 18+ with a severe and enduring functional mental illness, detained for treatment under the Mental Health Act (1983) or those subject to a court order.
• Co-morbidity- where alcohol or substance abuse exist alongside a mental illness
• Adults/Older people with organic brain damage either due to alcohol or other substance misuse.
• Acquired Head Injuries
• Adults/Older people with early / late onset dementia (all categories) who are very challenging and are detained under the Mental Health Act (1983).
• Informal service users with severe and enduring mental health problems (18+)
• Service users whose primary diagnosis is of mental illness (including personality disorders) and a secondary diagnosis of learning disability.
• Patients for whom a mild Learning Disability is a secondary diagnosis coupled alongside a diagnosis of mental illness
• Frequent users of inpatient beds with established patterns of relapse
• Slow and fast stream rehabilitation and recovery
• Those who require longer term strategies and support including appropriate accommodation, risk management and greater monitoring by services
We do not admit:
* Children (below the age of 18 years)
* Patients with Eating disorders as a primary diagnosis
* Patients with Moderate to Severe Learning disability as a primary diagnosis
* Patients with a primary diagnosis of paedophillia or sexual deviance
