Recession and unemployment are serious threats to mental health. New research shows that being unemployed doubles the risk of psychological problems. Researchers found that more than a third of those out of work had problems, compared to just 16 per cent of those in employment.
"The result is a clear and unequivocal warning that unemployment is a severe risk for public mental health that must be fought with all possible means", say the researchers. "These findings endorse the assumption that unemployment is not only correlated to distress, but actually causes it".
